A vortex flow meter is a type of flow measurement device that measures the volumetric flow rate of fluids, such as liquids, gases, and steam. These meters operate under the vortex shedding principle, also known as the von Kármán effect.
- Principle of Operation: When fluid flows around an obstruction, called a bluff body, inserted into the flow stream, vortices (or eddies) are shed alternately downstream of the object in a repeating pattern.
- Measurement: A sensor detects these vortices. The frequency at which the vortices are shed is directly proportional to the flow velocity.
- Application: With no moving parts, these meters ensure minimal maintenance and are suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, including oil and gas, chemical processing, water management, and power generation.
